Citizenship Application

Certificate of Citizenship Form N-600

What is the difference between an Application for Naturalization (U.S. Citizenship) and an Application for a Certificate of Citizenship?

People who are already U.S. citizens, either by birth or through “automatic citizenship”, can request a Certificate of Citizenship to prove their U.S. citizenship. Form N-600 is not an application for naturalization. People who are U.S. permanent residents (green card holders) can apply for U.S. citizenship with Form N-400, Application for Naturalization.

Who should file Form N-600?

According to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), you should file Form N-600 if:

  • You are requesting a Certificate of Citizenship because you were born outside the U.S. to a U.S. citizen parent;
  • You are requesting a Certificate of Citizenship because you automatically became a U.S. citizen after birth but before you turned 18 years old.
